Contrasting Demeanors: how Body Language Revealed Tension Between Trump and Netanyahu

Analysis of the recent meeting between Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu reveals a shift in dynamics, with body language suggesting growing unease from Trump as the Israeli Prime Minister regained his composure. Experts observing the event noted a stark contrast in the leaders’ presentations, initially reflecting a perceived power imbalance that later appeared to subtly reverse.

Initially, Netanyahu appeared “defeated and deflated” as he approached the podium, according to body language expert Patti Wood. She described him as having a lowered gaze, avoiding eye contact, and exhibiting physical signs of stress like rocking and fidgeting. His gestures, including reaching for the microphone, were interpreted as protective and indicative of a desire to “hide.” Wood also suggested he may have been forced to adjust a prepared speech due to the meeting’s unexpected turn.

In contrast, Trump projected confidence, speaking in a “low, grave voice” that signaled the meeting had unfolded as he intended. Though, as netanyahu recovered and delivered a more assertive speech, Trump’s demeanor reportedly changed. Towards the end of Netanyahu’s remarks, Trump was observed pursing his lips, a gesture interpreted by Wood as indicating he was becoming “fed up.”

Judi james further highlighted the physical interactions between the two leaders, noting Trump’s “dominant-looking reward slap” and guiding hand on Netanyahu’s back as they left the stage, seemingly cutting off potential questions.

The contrast extended to their speech patterns. Trump spoke close to the microphone, with audible heavy breathing, and frequently referenced himself in the third person, framing the agreement as a personal triumph. He described the peace initiative as being “for eternity” and announced he would head the “Board of Peace” as “Donald J Trump.” He also emphasized the need for action to be taken “Quickly,” biting the word for emphasis.

Netanyahu, while initially hesitant and consulting his notes, quickly “found his footing” and spoke with strength, framing the situation as a conflict between “civilisation and barbarism” and praising his soldiers as “fight[ing] like lions.” He also appeared eager to endorse Trump’s claim that “they like me in Israel,” offering thanks and acknowledging Trump’s leadership.

Ultimately, the analysis suggests a dynamic where Trump’s initial confidence was challenged as Netanyahu regained his composure, leading to visible signs of discomfort from the American President.
