Trump Shifts Stance on Ukraine as Reports Detail Russia‘s Economic Strain
WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump has markedly altered his public position on the war in Ukraine, expressing a view that now aligns with providing aid as Russia faces mounting economic difficulties stemming from the conflict. This shift comes amid new U.S. intelligence assessments indicating Russia is on the brink of economic collapse due to the ongoing war.
The change in rhetoric represents a departure from Trump’s previous skepticism regarding support for ukraine and his often complimentary stance toward Russian President vladimir Putin. While still emphasizing European responsibility for funding Ukraine, Trump’s statements suggest a willingness to continue U.S. weapons deliveries through a new mechanism allowing European nations to purchase arms from American manufacturers. This growth carries both potential benefits for Ukraine and anxieties in Europe regarding the long-term commitment of the United States to direct military aid.
Trump articulated his revised perspective on his Truth Social platform, stating, “putin and Russia are in great economic difficulties, and this is the right time for Ukraine.” He also criticized Russia’s military progress, noting,”They are making a very arduous progress when you consider that they have put everything into play. Your economy goes down.”
Despite the altered tone, Trump continues to assert that European nations should bear the primary responsibility for supporting Ukraine. He indicated he would support “continued weapons to NATO to deliver so that NATO can do what it wants,” referencing a new system enabling European countries to procure U.S. weaponry for ukraine.
Experts are divided on the implications of Trump’s shift. While Ukraine has welcomed the change,European officials reportedly fear it could foreshadow a potential withdrawal of direct U.S. military support, according to the Kyiv Self-reliant.
