Trump Urges EU to Halt Russian Energy Purchases, Cites Impact on Ukraine Support
WASHINGTON – Donald trump has publicly called on European Union nations to promptly end all energy purchases from Russia, arguing that continued reliance on Russian oil and gas undermines efforts to support Ukraine and effectively combats Russian aggression. The former president stated he would discuss the issue with EU leaders, asserting, “They can’t be doing what they’re doing. They’re buying oil and gas from Russia while they’re fighting Russia … They have to immediately cease all energy purchases from Russia. Or else, we are all wasting a lot of time.”
Trump’s demand comes as the EU is preparing its 19th package of sanctions against Russia, which includes export controls targeting 45 companies accused of helping Moscow circumvent existing sanctions. These include entities in China, Thailand, and India. however, the continued flow of energy revenue to Russia from some EU member states remains a point of contention, particularly as Ukraine seeks to regain territory lost since the 2022 invasion.
Hungary has stated it is currently unable to discontinue Russian energy imports. Foreign minister Péter Szijjártó told the Guardian, “We can’t ensure the safe supply [of energy products] for our country without Russian oil or gas sources,” while acknowledging understanding of Trump’s position. Szijjártó emphasized that Hungary’s energy security is “a purely physical question,” dependent on existing infrastructure like the Druzhba oil pipeline and the TurkStream gas pipeline.
Slovakia, the other EU nation still importing Russian oil, indicated a willingness to diversify its energy sources, stating it has discussed the issue with the US and received a positive response.Economy Minister Denisa Saková said Slovakia has ”no problem diversifying” as long as choice routes and sufficient transmission capacity are available.
Both Hungary and Slovakia have been vocal in calling for reduced EU support for Ukraine.
