EU Fines google, Prompting sharp response from President Trump

Brussels has imposed a significant financial penalty on Google, drawing immediate criticism from U.S. President Donald Trump. According to a statement released via social media, President Trump asserted that the European Commission’s action “strikes” another American company and diverts funds “that could be allocated to investments and workplaces in the USA.”

“It is a very unfair [decision] and American taxpayer dose not tolerate it,” President Trump wrote. He further stated that his administration “would not allow these discriminatory actions to be maintained.”

President Trump also referenced previous fines levied against Apple, suggesting the company should be reimbursed. He indicated that the U.S. may initiate proceedings under Section 301 of the Trade Act of 1974 if the European Commission does not reverse its decision. Section 301 allows the imposition of retaliatory duties and trade barriers in response to perceived unfair trade practices.

The European Commission’s decision comes as a U.S. federal Court in Washington concluded a separate antitrust case against Google. The court issued a relatively mild penalty, rejecting the administration’s request to force Google to divest Chrome or android. Though, the legal proceedings concerning the company’s advertising practices remain ongoing.
