Trump on Taiwan Arms Sales: Decision Coming Soon

February 17, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

President Donald Trump’s administration announced Wednesday, December 17, 2025, more than $10 billion in arms sales to Taiwan, a move certain to escalate tensions with China. The package includes medium-range missiles, howitzers, and drones, according to statements released by the State Department and confirmed by the White House.

The arms sales consist of 82 High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS) and 420 Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS), valued at over $4 billion. These systems are similar to those the U.S. Has been providing to Ukraine, officials noted. An additional $4 billion will be allocated to 60 self-propelled howitzer systems and related equipment, with a further $1 billion earmarked for drones.

Trump stated earlier in the day that his administration would decide on weapons sales to Taiwan “pretty soon,” as his anticipated trip to China approaches. The timing of the announcement, just weeks before a planned visit to Beijing, signals a deliberate effort to strengthen Taiwan’s defense capabilities and potentially signal U.S. Resolve to China.

The State Department has not yet publicly addressed China’s expected response to the sale. The announcement follows a period of increased military activity by China near Taiwan, including frequent incursions into Taiwan’s air defense identification zone. The U.S. Does not formally recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, but maintains unofficial relations and provides defensive arms.

The administration’s decision to proceed with the sale, despite likely Chinese objections, underscores a commitment to supporting Taiwan’s self-defense. The sale is expected to be a key point of contention during Trump’s upcoming visit to China, with Beijing likely to demand assurances that the U.S. Will refrain from further arms sales to Taiwan.
