Trump & Netanyahu on Iran: War Risk & Shifting Positions

February 13, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

President Donald Trump, despite reported reservations from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, reiterated his willingness to engage in direct talks with Iranian and Hamas leaders, a position disclosed following a three-hour meeting at the White House on Wednesday. The meeting, convened at Netanyahu’s urging, centered on concerns over Iran’s nuclear program, ballistic missile development and regional influence.

Netanyahu traveled to Washington seeking to persuade Trump to maintain a hard line in negotiations with Iran, advocating for a comprehensive agreement that extends beyond limitations on its nuclear capabilities. According to a source familiar with the Israeli position, Israel insists any deal must address Iran’s ballistic missile program and its support for proxy groups throughout the Middle East, as well as improvements in the treatment of Iranian protesters. Tens of thousands of protesters have been killed by the regime since late December, according to reports.

While Trump has consistently expressed openness to dialogue with adversaries, his administration’s specific strategy remains ambiguous. “Part of Here’s intentional misdirection on Trump’s part, but part of it is also highly unintentional,” said Ben Samuels, Washington D.C. Correspondent for Haaretz, in a podcast following the meeting. “Trump is doing diplomacy by the seat of his pants and by whatever whims are taking over him at that very moment.”

The meeting took place against a backdrop of heightened military tensions in the region. Reports indicate the Trump administration is considering deploying a second aircraft carrier strike group to the Persian Gulf, adding to the existing naval presence. This move, according to sources, is intended to signal resolve and deter potential Iranian aggression.

The BBC reported that Trump told Netanyahu that Iran nuclear talks must continue, though the specifics of those discussions and any potential red lines remain unclear. CNN reported that the Epstein files controversy was also discussed during the meeting, but details were not disclosed.

Netanyahu’s visit comes as the United States continues to reassess its policy toward Iran following its withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) in 2018. The Trump administration has pursued a policy of “maximum pressure” on Iran, imposing sanctions aimed at crippling its economy and forcing it to renegotiate a more restrictive nuclear agreement.

The differing approaches of the two leaders – Netanyahu’s insistence on a broad, encompassing agreement and Trump’s unpredictable negotiating style – raise questions about the future direction of U.S. Policy toward Iran. The United States has positioned military assets around Iran to maintain the option of military intervention, according to reports, though the White House has not confirmed any specific plans for military action.
