Trump, 79, Has “Cardiac Age” of 65-Year-Old, Doctor Says
A recent medical evaluation found former President Donald Trump, 79, to be in “exceptional health,” according to a memo released by the White House on Friday. His physician, Sean Barbabella, reported that Trump’s “cardiac age” is approximately 14 years younger than his chronological age – equivalent to that of a 65-year-old.
Trump was the oldest person to assume the presidency when he returned to office in January, and is the second oldest ever to serve as U.S. president. Despite his age and a demanding schedule, including a planned trip to the Middle East following the brokering of a Gaza ceasefire deal, Dr. Barbabella stated Trump exhibits “strong cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and physical performance.”
The memo, addressed to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, also noted Trump received preventive health screenings and immunizations, including annual flu and updated COVID-19 booster vaccinations, in planning for international travel.
This evaluation follows a more extensive physical examination conducted in April, which revealed Trump to be 6 feet, 3 inches (190 cm) tall and 224 pounds (102 kg) with well-controlled high cholesterol.
The White House previously addressed concerns regarding swelling in Trump’s lower legs and bruising on his right hand, disclosed in July. Dr. Barbabella attributed the leg swelling to “chronic venous insufficiency,” a common condition, particularly in individuals over 70, and the bruising to minor soft tissue irritation from frequent handshaking and aspirin use – part of Trump’s “standard cardiovascular prevention regimen.”
The release of this latest health assessment comes after President Joe Biden ended his 2024 reelection bid last year, partially due to questions surrounding his own fitness for office. During the campaign, Trump frequently contrasted his health with Biden’s, portraying himself as younger and more vigorous. He underwent the routine yearly checkup at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland, alongside a meeting and remarks with troops.
