Trump Expresses Disappointment with Putin as Ukraine Peace Deadline Looms
WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump said Tuesday he was “very disappointed” with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s actions following their recent summit, notably regarding a lack of progress toward a peace agreement in Ukraine.
“I’m very disappointed in President Putin, I can say that,” Trump told teh Scott Jennings radio show. “We had a great relationship, I’m very disappointed.”
The statement comes as a two-week deadline set by the Trump administration for a potential ukraine peace deal nears its expiration.Despite the deadline, Trump did not detail any potential repercussions for Russia.Addressing concerns about a growing alliance between Russia and China,Trump dismissed the possibility of a threat. Putin met with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing on Tuesday prior to a military parade.
“I’m not concerned at all, no,” Trump stated. ”We have the strongest military in the world by far and they would never use their military on us, believe me that would be the worst thing they could ever do.”
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated Monday, in an interview with Fox News, that the administration is considering a response to russia’s continued actions. Bessent noted that Putin has ”done the opposite of following through” on commitments made after a summit and a phone call with Trump, which occurred while Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders were visiting the White House.
“Actually, he has, in a despicable, despicable manner, increased the bombing campaign,” Bessent said. “So I think with President Trump, all options are on the table, and I think we’ll be examining those very closely this week.”
