Trump Repeats False Claim of FBI Involvement in January 6th Capitol Breach
WASHINGTON – Former President Donald Trump asserted on Saturday that FBI agents were present at the January 6, 2021, Capitol protest, alleging they acted as “agitators and insurrectionists” rather than law enforcement. This claim contradicts findings from a Justice Department investigation.
Trump made the statement on his Truth Social platform, writing, “It now turns out, FBI Agents were at, and in, the January 6th Protest, probably acting as Agitators and Insurrectionists, but certainly not as ‘law enforcement officials.'” Though,a report released last year by the Justice Department’s Inspector General found no evidence to support the allegation that the FBI deployed undercover employees within the protest crowds or at the Capitol building on that day.
The Inspector General’s report did confirm that “hundreds” of FBI agents were dispatched to the Capitol to provide assistance to Capitol Police. The investigation thoroughly examined the claims of undercover involvement but found no substantiation.
