Trump calls Judge Reyes a lunatic over East Potomac golf course
A federal judge is facing a legal battle and online threats over the sudden destruction of more than 400 trees at the East Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., as Donald Trump pushes forward with plans to redevelop the municipal property into a “World Class Championship Golf Course,” the-independent.com reported.
Trees Cleared Over Holiday Weekend Sparking Courtroom Conflict
More than 400 trees were cut down over a holiday weekend at the nearly 400-acre public park. Preservationists are suing to halt the transformation, which has drawn District Judge Ana C. Reyes into an intense legal confrontation with top administration officials. During court proceedings, Judge Reyes reprimanded government officials for the rapid tree removal.
In response to the courtroom reprimands, Associate Attorney General Stanley Woodward filed a motion on Saturday night to remove Judge Reyes from the case. Woodward accused the judge of “egregious” behavior, “open hostility,” and “histrionics.” Judge Reyes swiftly shot down the recusal attempt, writing that it is much harder to meet the demanding legal standard against a full record.
Trump Announces Park Closure as Judge Reyes Receives Death Threats
The conflict intensified as Trump announced over the weekend that the park’s redevelopment will begin in November, leading to a 15-month closure of the park. Trump subsequently posted that the Department of the Interior possesses an absolute right to upgrade the golf course and labeled Judge Reyes a ‘lunatic’. During a seven-hour hearing on Monday, Judge Reyes expressed concern over conflicting statements from the administration and the president regarding the timeline of the park’s closure. She also disclosed to the courtroom that her office has received death threats in connection with the litigation.
