Transmission Gully Speed Limit Increased to 110km/h Ahead of Severe Weather | Wellington, NZ

Signage indicating the upcoming speed limit increase on State Highway 1 through Transmission Gully is being installed ahead of schedule, in anticipation of severe weather forecast to impact the North Island this weekend. The modern speed limit of 110 km/h will grab effect at 12:01 am on Monday, February 16th, but warning signs will be in place 24 hours prior, according to NZTA Waka Kotahi.

The accelerated sign installation was prompted by strong winds predicted to affect the Wellington region, making it unsafe for crews to complete the work on Sunday night as originally planned. Work will now be completed on Saturday night, NZTA Waka Kotahi stated.

Despite the speed limit increase, drivers are cautioned to adhere to any temporary speed restrictions in place due to ongoing roadworks along the motorway. “This is essential for keeping the public and contractors safe,” the transport agency said.

The decision to raise the speed limit on the 27km stretch of highway follows public consultation conducted in mid-2025 and was formally announced earlier this week by Transport Minister Chris Bishop.

The speed limit change coincides with weather warnings issued by MetService, including orange level wind warnings for the Wairarapa, Tararua District, and Wellington region, beginning Sunday evening and extending through Monday. Strong wind warnings are also in effect for eastern Marlborough, potentially impacting sections of State Highway 1.

Ongoing pavement reconstruction at Waitangirua continues to cause disruptions. Work on the southbound lanes is expected to be completed early next week, weather permitting. Reconstruction of the northbound lanes will begin next week and continue through late February, also contingent on weather conditions. The southbound offramp at Waitangirua remains closed 24/7 until Friday night, February 13th. A closure of the Waitangirua northbound on-ramp for approximately five days is planned to begin next week, with specific timing to be announced.

Resurfacing work is also underway between Paekākāriki and the State Highway 58 interchange, requiring night closures. Drivers are advised to consider using State Highway 59 as an alternative route to avoid potential delays, particularly during peak commuting hours.
