The European variant of the Toyota GR86 has a 2.4-liter engine finally tuned to 172 kW. However, the car will only be available for a limited time.
Toyota President Akio Toyota loves driving, so there’s a sports coupe developed in collaboration with Subaru in its second generation. This time his name is Toyota GR86 according to the brand’s racing department, but he still wants to be the fun and still affordable sports car.
The European specification, following the example of the American and Japanese, also receives a new 2.4-liter engine, which replaces the existing two-liter. However, it still retains the “boxer” arrangement with counter-rotating pistons, for a low center of gravity, as well as atmospheric filling for a linear character.
In the European version, the engine is tuned to 172 kW, which is a kilowatt less than the Japanese. On the other hand, it is a significant intergenerational increase, the two-liter predecessor provided 147 kW. The torque has also increased significantly, by 250 Nm, 45 Nm more than before. In addition, it is available at much lower speeds, in 3700 min-1, which should be useful, for example, when accelerating at the exit of corners.
The four-cylinder DOHC 16v valve unit, by the way, uses the same cylinder block as in the past, but the bore diameter has increased from 86 to 94 mm. As a result, the displacement increased from 1998 to 2387 cm3. The high compression ratio of 12.5: 1 also remained, while the D-4S direct and indirect fuel injection system was further tuned for a faster response to the accelerator pedal.
In addition to increasing performance, a criticized feature of the existing GT86, the designers also focused on reducing engine weight. Relief was achieved by thinner cylinder liners, optimization of the cylinder liner or replacement of the originally aluminum rocker arm cover with a plastic part, which also reduced vibrations. These are also reduced by the new hydraulic mounting of the aluminum motor, or the redesigned and stiffer construction of the oil sump with a new rib profile.

The connecting rods are stronger and the shape of the connecting rod bearings and the combustion chamber has also been optimized. Adjusting the diameter and length of the intake manifold then helped a more linear torque curve. The sound is improved by a new component of the exhaust pipe, the central tube with a volume of 5.6 liters.
The gearboxes also had to adapt to higher performance. Both a six-speed manual and a six-speed vending machine will continue to be available. The new low-viscosity oil in combination with the new bearings guarantees smooth shifting despite the increase in engine power. In addition, the gearbox selector has a shorter run after overhaul and fits better in the hand. The machine, in turn, received additional clutch plates for a smoother transmission of higher engine power, the new is also a high-capacity torque converter.
Changes for driving characteristics
The larger engine under the hood is also associated with modifications to the chassis, which aimed to further improve the “handling” of the car. This increased rigidity and, conversely, reduced weight.
In the front of the vehicle, transverse struts are built into the joints between the wheel suspension and the car frame, which is reflected in better load transfer from the front tires and suppression of bends in the lateral direction. Also new are the high-strength fasteners connecting the frame to the wheel suspension brackets; a new cross frame is built inside the bonnet, replacing the previously used honeycomb construction.
However, the chassis concept builds on its predecessor. It still consists of McPherson struts at the front and a trapezoidal suspension at the rear, with a self-locking Torsen differential. However, the shock absorbers and springs have been optimized for greater stability and more predictable behavior. By the way, the new electric power steering works with a gear ratio of 13.5: 1, there is only 2.5 revolutions between the extreme positions of the steering wheel. Ventilated disc brakes with a diameter of 294 and 290 mm, respectively, are used on the front and rear axles.
Of the light elements, let’s mention the hood, roof panel and front fenders made of aluminum. The new design then provided lower weight for the front seats, muffler or drive shaft. Thanks to this, the GR86 is one of the lightest four-seater coupes on the market, with a weight distribution of 53:47 between the axles.
The design of the car is directly related to its predecessor, including dimensions. However, the new LED headlights refer to the GR Supra in their graphics, while the front bumper has a more aerodynamic shape. Aerodynamics played a key role in the design, and there are also functional openings. For example, those on the sides behind the front wheel arches regulate the air flow and suppress swirling around the tires. In terms of dimensions, the GR86 is 10 mm lower than the GT86, the wheelbase then stretched slightly by five millimeters.
“The mission of GR86 is to open the gateway to the world of GR, and thus make this pleasure available to an even greater number of interested parties,” says its chief designer Jasunori Suezawa about the nature of the novelty. This is one of the reasons why the novelty is definitely not just a sports car for purists and experienced riders; on the contrary, it is intended not only for racing tracks, but also for ordinary roads. The price has not been announced yet, but it is to be the most affordable car in the GR series. It should therefore be cheaper than GR Yaris offered at prices from CZK 899,000.
But the truth is that the Toyota GR86 may not be as affordable in Europe. The carmaker has announced that the GR86 will be produced in just two years, so potential bidders should not delay too much with the order. GR86 may soon become a scarce commodity. On the other hand, it is still unclear for the fraternal Subaru BRZ whether it will get to Europe at all. The first pieces of GR86 will appear on European markets in the spring of 2022.
