Tölz Council Member Proposes Cyclist Access Trial on Pedestrian Zone

Tölz, Germany – A Tölz city councilor is advocating for a limited trial period allowing cyclists to slowly traverse the pedestrianized Marktstrasse, a move intended to boost business for local cafés and bars. Council member Anna Frei presented the idea to the city council, envisioning the addition of e-charging stations for bicycle batteries along the route to further incentivize cyclists to linger and patronize establishments.

Currently, cyclists are prohibited from riding on Marktstrasse. Frei’s proposal comes as the city grapples with limited infrastructure for electric bicycle users – onyl one charging station exists, located near the former kiosk on the left Isar bridgehead. The initiative aims to address this gap while potentially revitalizing foot traffic and commerce within the pedestrian zone.

Frei formally submitted her application to the council, which was read aloud during a recent meeting without immediate debate. Mayor Ingo Mehner (CSU) stated the city council’s traffic commission, including representatives from the police and district office, will first review the proposal before it returns for broader council discussion.

The proposal’s fate remains uncertain, pending the traffic commission’s assessment of potential safety and logistical concerns.
