Toei Animation and Lionsgate have launched a strategic distribution partnership centered on the upcoming animated feature Monkey Quest, set for a wide North American theatrical release in 2027. According to reporting from Deadline, Lionsgate will serve as Toei Animation’s theatrical distribution and marketing partner in the U.S. for new projects, while also functioning as a primary home for future co-productions.

The Structural Shift in Transnational Animation Distribution

Toei Animation, globally recognized for powerhouse anime franchises like One Piece and Digimon: Digital Monsters, is positioning its original feature slate for broader North American saturation.

Geobert Abboud, Executive Vice President of Business Strategy for Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, noted the studio’s intent to capitalize on Toei’s established footprint. “Their impact in the anime space with One Piece, Digimon, and so many other projects is undeniable, and we look forward to seeing how we can build on this momentum,” Abboud stated, as reported by Deadline. On the production side, Atsushi Suzuki, Senior Executive Officer and Head of Sales and Planning at Toei Animation, described the pact as a defining expansion for the studio’s global fanbase. “We could not ask for a better partner to help us introduce our films to new audiences,” Suzuki said.

Inside the Creative Engine of Monkey Quest

The film’s narrative centers on a fearless teenage girl and her brother who, while searching for their missing parents in a near-future world where wonder and danger collide, awaken Okon—Earth’s long-forgotten protector possessing extraordinary power. The unlikely trio must navigate a high-stakes journey to learn trust and familial bonds.

The production draws from notable industry veterans. The story was co-created by Naoto Oshima, the original character designer behind Sonic the Hedgehog. David N. Weiss, who wrote Shrek 2, serves as director. Co-directors include Stephanie Ma Stine (Kung-Fu Panda 4) and Takao Noguchi, whose character design credits include How to Train Your Dragon and The Croods.

The voice cast features Auli’i Cravalho (Moana, Mean Girls), Adam Devine (The Righteous Gemstones, The Out-Laws), J.K. Simmons (Whiplash, The Westies), Sam Richardson (Veep, The Afterparty), Skylar Astin (Pitch Perfect), Anna Chlumsky (Veep, Inventing Anna), and Jonathan Kite (2 Broke Girls). International sales outside the U.S. are being handled by Charades.
