Kim Dong Ryul performs concerts featuring stripped-down format

Kim Dong Ryul performs concerts featuring stripped-down format

October 25, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The shows marked the first time in the artist’s career that he performed an entire concert without an accompanying orchestra.

Stripping Back the Arrangement for 21,000 Fans

The 150-minute concerts featured 21 tracks performed with spoken commentary for each piece. The opening night on October 19 began with an audio announcement recorded by actor Lee Dong-wook, who previously appeared in Kim’s 2011 music video for “Replay.” Lee told the audience in the introductory broadcast that the singer was stepping onto the stage “like a warrior going into battle without a sword and shield.” Kim opened the show on a dark stage illuminated by a single spotlight, sitting at a piano to perform the first verse of “Winter Sleep” without instrumental backing. The first half of the setlist relied strictly on piano accompaniment rather than a full band.

The stripped-down format allowed the inclusion of lesser-performed tracks from Kim’s catalog. He performed “Don’t Say It’s Not Love,” a song he originally wrote for Lee Sora, alongside “The Same Dream” recorded with Alex. He also delivered “Bike Riding” and “Determinedly” from his Veranda Project collaboration with Lee Sang-soon. Pianist Jung Dong-hwan of Melomance accompanied Kim on grand piano and keyboard during the performances.

Physical Set Design Replacing Digital Screens

The acoustic format enabled physical stage design choices that would have been restricted by a large orchestra. During performances of “End of Summer” and “Moonlight,” stage curtains parted to reveal knee-high artificial green wheat fields constructed across the floor, while blue skies and dandelion spores were projected on screens. Kim explained during the show that his management agency staff spent time manually planting the wheat models to match the lyrical imagery of “End of Summer” rather than relying solely on background video.

The second half of the concerts introduced a 20-piece ensemble featuring violins, cellos, percussion, brass, and backing vocalists to support tango, jazz, and acoustic pop arrangements. The setlist built toward signature ballads including “Do You Think We Can Love Again,” “Drunken Talk,” and “That’s That,” before closing with encores “That Song” and “Accompaniment.”

Maintaining Artistic Independence in a Rapid Market

The run sold out entirely, averaging 3,000 attendees per night across the seven dates.
