TikTok Video Sparks Outcry, Saves Aging Water Buffalo from Slaughter
A viral TikTok video has led to the rescue of an elderly water buffalo, known as a carabao, from a potential sale for slaughter in the Philippines. Bataan Animal Welfare shared the story of “Mr. Beoncio” on its Facebook page, highlighting the animal’s advanced age and years of service.
According to the group, Mr. Beoncio would be considered a “senior citizen” deserving of “respect, protection and much-needed rest” by human standards. However, they expressed dismay that,”because it’s just an ‘animal’,some still think it’s normal that he ends up at a slaughterhouse to be sold by the kilo.”
“This is not right. This is not humane,” Bataan Animal Welfare stated. “This is not fair for a life that served faithfully till its strength failed him.”
Carabaos are vital to Philippine agriculture, frequently enough referred to as “living tractors” due to their use in ploughing and harrowing rice fields, and as a primary mode of transportation in rural areas. Their strength and temperament are well-suited for the physically demanding work common in Philippine farming.
