A four-year-old boy is in critical condition after a shooting at a southeast Houston apartment complex Monday afternoon. The incident occurred just before 1 p.m. at the SageHollow Apartments, located in the 10700 block of Fuqua Street.
Houston police report the child sustained a gunshot wound to the head after obtaining a firearm and accidentally discharging it.Authorities are investigating how the child accessed the weapon. The boy was transported to a local hospital and was scheduled for surgery Monday night.
Investigators detained the child’s mother and her fiancé for questioning, but no arrests have been made as of Monday evening. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will review the findings and determine if any charges will be filed.
“Nobody should have a gun accessible to any child of any age. I hope that they get to the bottom of it. I hope they know exactly what happened,” said Cathy Lazenberry, a witness who observed first responders arriving at the scene.
This incident underscores the ongoing concerns surrounding child access to firearms and the potential for accidental shootings.According to data from Everytown for Gun Safety, unintentional shootings by children are a persistent problem, with hundreds occurring each year.
