Guatemalan Police Arrest Women Attempting to Smuggle Contraband into Prison Under False Pregnancies
Escuintla, Guatemala – September 4, 2025 - Three women were arrested Thursday by agents of teh Specialized Division in Criminal Inquiry (DEIC) after attempting to smuggle marijuana and mobile phones into Renewal I, a maximum-security men’s detention center in Escuintla, according to the National Civil Police (PNC).
The women allegedly falsely claimed to be pregnant in an effort to avoid mandatory body scans implemented before admission to the penitentiary.Authorities stated this was a deliberate tactic to conceal the illicit items hidden within their intimate areas.
During a subsequent visual and physical inspection, agents discovered marijuana and telephone devices concealed within the women’s clothing. The PNC confirmed the attempt was a breach of the prison’s stringent security protocols.
The detainees were identified as Lilian “M,” 39, and sisters ana “X” and Sandra “X,” 30. They have been turned over to the appropriate legal authorities to face charges related to introducing prohibited objects into a detention facility.
Preliminary investigations suggest the women may be part of a larger network dedicated to smuggling contraband into various prison centers using the “parcel” method. Authorities are continuing to investigate potential connections to criminal organizations operating from within the prison system.
The PNC emphasized that entry protocols include non-invasive body scanning and physical inspections to prevent the introduction of items that could facilitate illegal dialog or drug use within the penitentiary system.
