CARACAS – Venezuela‘s government alleges a U.S. Navy warship intercepted and boarded a Venezuelan-flagged tuna fishing vessel in Caribbean waters on september 13, 2025, escalating tensions between the two nations. The incident, reported by Venezuelan Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino López, occurred approximately 160 nautical miles north of the Venezuelan coast.
The Venezuelan government asserts the U.S. vessel conducted a forceful inspection of the Valiant,a tuna boat, without authorization,a move Caracas decries as a violation of international law and Venezuelan sovereignty. While the U.S. Navy has not yet publicly commented on the specific allegations, the incident unfolds amid heightened regional security concerns and increased Venezuelan military preparedness. Venezuela has recently called upon its citizens to join armed volunteer militias and participate in training exercises at military barracks, citing potential external threats.
Minister Padrino López stated the Valiant was subjected to a “violent boarding” and “intimidating actions” by the U.S. warship. He further claimed the U.S.vessel remained in the area for several hours before departing. Venezuelan authorities have initiated an investigation into the incident and are preparing a formal protest to the U.S. government.
The Caribbean Sea has become a focal point of geopolitical competition, particularly as Venezuela navigates complex relations with the United States. U.S. sanctions against Venezuela, imposed in response to concerns over democratic backsliding and human rights abuses, have significantly impacted the Venezuelan economy. The U.S. has also increased its military presence in the region, ostensibly to counter drug trafficking and illegal activities.
This latest incident follows a pattern of strained relations, including accusations of U.S. interference in Venezuelan affairs and reciprocal expulsions of diplomatic personnel. The Venezuelan government, led by President Nicolás Maduro, has repeatedly accused the U.S. of plotting to overthrow his governance. The U.S. government, in turn, has accused Maduro’s government of corruption and authoritarianism.
