Latin American Scholars Converge to explore Intersections of Music,Gender,and Diversity
Buenos Aires,Argentina – The V Latin American Meeting of Music,Gender and Diversity commenced today,October 1st,at the universidad Nacional de las Artes (UNA),bringing together researchers,artists,and activists to examine critical perspectives within the field of music. The two-day event features a diverse program of panels, presentations, and performances centered around themes of gender dissidence, critical pedagogies, body politics, feminist activism, and care within Latin American musical contexts.
The meeting’s schedule includes presentations such as Jesús Antonio Córdoba Romero’s research on “Female participation in metal bands during 2024 events in Colombia” and Paula Mesa’s exploration of ”Art y Genre from a Latin American approach.” A keynote conference will be delivered by Susan McClary, Fynette H. Kulas Professor of Music at Case Western Reserve university and Distinguished Professor Emerita at UCLA.
Several panels focus on activism and its manifestation within musical institutions. Table 6, dedicated to “activism, care and new artistic looks,” will feature presentations on topics ranging from transfeminist artistic power in coastal carnivals to the development of a “Musical care protocol: feminist and collective activism from a music union” by Marcela Inostroza Valdés and Leonela Berenice Vogel.
The meeting also highlights emerging scholarship, including Tzitzitlini sanabria Calvo’s book presentation on “Community musical groups and gender outlook.” The event will conclude with a musical performance by “La Hive” on October 2nd.
Organized by the Music, Gender and Diversity Coordination (musicales.genero@una.edu.ar), the V Latin American Meeting of Music, Gender and Diversity builds upon previous gatherings aimed at fostering dialogue and research on these increasingly vital topics within the Latin American musical landscape.
