UAB Women’s Basketball Secures Decisive 81-54 Victory Over Southern Illinois

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The‍ UAB women’s basketball team dominated Southern ⁤Illinois on Wednesday, earning an ‌81-54 win fueled by a strong offensive performance and stifling defense. The ​Blazers showcased their ​scoring​ prowess, shooting a season-high 53 percent⁣ from the field and 47 percent from ​behind the arc. This victory marks a significant mid-season boost for UAB ⁤as they continue ⁢their non-conference schedule and prepare for Conference USA‍ play.

UAB’s ⁤commanding win was built on consistent scoring throughout the⁢ game, punctuated by career and season-best performances from multiple players. The team’s ability to control the paint (26 points) and capitalize ​on​ turnovers (17 points) proved crucial.With this win, UAB improves its record ​and gains⁢ momentum heading into its next contest.

Zoe moffitt led ⁤the Blazers with a career-high performance, recording nine field goals and seven 3-pointers. Denim⁤ DeShields added 19 points to the⁢ scoreboard.Maria Munoz grabbed a season-high eight rebounds,‍ while Journey Armstead registered a season-best⁢ nine assists and matched her season-high of six rebounds, adding ‌eight points. Eleecia Carter also achieved a season-best​ with six assists.

The Blazers started⁢ strong,opening with a three-pointer from Moffitt and​ building a 21-10 lead by the end of the first quarter,thanks to an 11-0 run. UAB extended their lead to 16 points in the second quarter before ⁢heading into halftime ⁤with a 35-23 advantage, shooting 40 percent ​from the field and 29 percent from three.

Southern Illinois briefly threatened in the third quarter,‌ closing the gap to five points, but‌ UAB responded with key baskets from Smallwood and Duffy to regain control, leading 52-43 at the end of the period. The fourth quarter saw UAB ‍pull away decisively with an 8-0 run and ‌a late 16-3 surge, ultimately securing the‌ 27-point victory. Freshman Mari ‍Miller capped off the ​win with a three-pointer in the final​ seconds.
