WASHINGTON ‌D.C. – ⁣Former U.S. President Donald Trump was awarded⁢ the FIFA Peace Prize by FIFA President‌ Gianni Infantino at a gala event in Washington D.C., sparking both praise and calls for action. Trump was seen⁤ accepting the medal‍ and placing‍ it around his own neck, as captured by Reuters.

The event drew high-profile‌ attendees including Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who joined Trump and Infantino on the⁣ red carpet. Trump also chairs the American World Cup task force he founded and⁣ has been a guest at the White House multiple times.

DFB President Bernd Neuendorf defended the award, specifically citing Trump’s role⁤ in what he described as ending the conflict in Gaza. “We ⁤were all happy together when the conflict in the Middle East ended that an agreement was signed here. You⁢ have to be honest, that⁣ would not have been‍ possible without the USA and without the ⁣commitment of the President. In this respect, what happened is‌ commendable,” Neuendorf stated.

Though, German national coach Julian Nagelsmann expressed hope that the recognition would inspire a greater commitment to global stability from the U.S. President. “It’s ‌vital to me that such a price means that you are committed to peace in the⁤ world in the future. He is the ‌most influential man in the ‌world,” Nagelsmann said while in Washington.

Neuendorf acknowledged the extensive entertainment surrounding the World Cup ⁢draw, noting, “We’re in the United States, that’s part of it, that’s the culture here.” The FIFA ⁤Peace Prize is awarded to individuals who have made ‍significant contributions to promoting peace ⁣and resolving conflicts through football.
