Taiwanese Boxers Shine: Three Advance to World Boxing Cup Finals in India
Greater Noida, India, Nov. 20 (CNA) – three Taiwanese female boxers-Wu Shih-yi, Chen Nien-chin, and Guo Yi-xuan-have secured their places in the finals of the World Boxing Cup, demonstrating Taiwan‘s rising strength in the sport. The victories, achieved Wednesday at the Shaheed Vijay Singh Pathik Sports Complex in Greater Noida, India, position the athletes for potential gold medals and build momentum heading into next year’s Asian Games.
The trio’s success included a dramatic comeback win for Olympic bronze medalist chen Nien-chin in the 65-kilogram division. Despite falling behind in the first two rounds against India’s Neeraj Phogat, Chen rallied with an aggressive third round, earning a unanimous decision from all five judges. “I just had to win,” Chen stated after the match, adding that a finals victory would allow her to end the season “on a perfect note.” She will face Dione Burman of England for the gold.
Twenty-year-old Guo Yi-xuan also delivered a decisive performance, defeating Zhansaya Rakhymberdi of Kazakhstan 4-1 in the women’s 51-kg semifinals. Guo employed a strategy of close-range exchanges and effective counter-punching, overcoming a point deduction in the third round to secure the win. Coach Ko Wen-ming praised Guo’s tactics, noting her ability to close distance quickly despite her smaller stature.”The win against Rakhymberdi will surely boost Guo’s confidence, as Kazakh boxers are known to be generally very skilled,” Ko said.
rounding out the Taiwanese success,Olympic bronze medalist Wu Shih-yi dominated Park Ahhyeon of South Korea with a 5-0 victory in the 57-kg semifinals. While pleased with her advancement, Wu expressed some apprehension about her upcoming opponent. “I’m happy to reach the final, but I’m a bit nervous, as I’ll be facing a home-favorite Indian boxer. I just hope I can perform well,” she told CNA. Wu will compete against Jaismine Lamboria, the gold medalist from September’s World Boxing championships in Liverpool.
