Several Injured in South Side Crash Following Reported Street Racing; Neighbors demand action
A head-on collision on Pleasanton Road sent six people to hospitals with injuries after one driver allegedly raced another and then fled the scene, according to San Antonio Police Department (SAPD). The crash occurred as drivers were traveling northbound on the roadway. Four people were initially reported as hospitalized, but SAPD later confirmed six injuries.
Residents near the crash site say dangerous speeding and illegal racing are rampant in the area, contributing to a climate of fear and, tragically, loss. The incident has renewed calls for increased law enforcement presence and traffic calming measures on Pleasanton road, where neighbors report frequent reckless driving, even with vehicles traveling the wrong way.
Neighbors told KSAT they weren’t surprised by the crash, citing regular occurrences of speeding. “There’s no lights out here,” said Mikayla, a resident of the area. “It’s bad, like people speed like crazy out here.” Another resident reported the loss of a dog due to speeding drivers.
Witnesses described racers using both the northbound and southbound lanes in the same direction, meaning one vehicle is frequently enough driving against traffic. Nicholas hernandez stated,”I would like to have a cop out here most of the time cause there’s a lot of like - at night,I hear just ‘whoosh whoosh’ back and forth,” referencing the speed of vehicles.
A KSAT investigation using a Bushnell radar gun recorded drivers exceeding the speed limit by as much as 29 mph – reaching 69 mph in a 40 mph zone near an intersection with a flashing yellow light. Mikayla added, “you can hear a lot of just brakes, and it’s scary…I hate it, like it’s bad. I will never drive, I will never. It’s just scary out here.”
SAPD has not released further information regarding the driver who left the scene.
