OpenAI‘s Sora AI App sees Massive Android Adoption, Nearing 500K Downloads in Debut Day
San Francisco, CA – OpenAI’s highly anticipated Sora, the text-to-video AI generator, experienced a surge in popularity upon its Android release, racking up nearly half a million downloads within its first 24 hours, according to data from app tracking firm Sensor Tower. The app is currently available in over 140 countries.
The rapid adoption underscores growing consumer interest in generative AI and positions Sora as a potential disruptor in the video creation landscape.Initially available through a waitlist, Sora allows users to create videos from text prompts, offering a new avenue for content creation accessible to a wider audience. The app’s launch follows a period of limited access and testing, and comes as OpenAI adjusts usage limits and introduces new features aimed at both casual and professional creators.
Currently, Sora access is tied to a user’s chatgpt account. Free users previously could generate up to 30 videos per day, while Pro users were limited to 100.OpenAI has now implemented a pay-per-use system, offering an additional 10 video generations for $4 when daily limits are reached. ChatGPT Pro subscribers are considered paying Sora users.
OpenAI is also rolling out new tools for Pro users, including a storyboarding feature – a standard practice in professional filmmaking – allowing for more detailed video planning before generation. This addition, alongside potential future updates like longer run times and higher resolutions, signals a possible shift towards attracting professional creators, a segment openai has previously struggled to engage.
