Peruvian Athlete Claims Historic Gold at Para Athletics World championships
NEW DELHI – Peru‘s Kimberly Mamani Quispe etched her name into the history books today, securing the nation’s first-ever gold medal at the World Para Athletics Championships. Competing in the women’s 200m T20 event, Mamani Quispe finished with a time of 24.03 seconds, a personal best, and a commanding victory over her competitors.
This landmark achievement marks a turning point for Para athletics in Peru, signaling growing investment and opportunity for athletes with disabilities. The win is expected to inspire a new generation of Peruvian athletes and elevate the profile of Para sports within the country. The World Para Athletics Championships, currently underway in New Delhi, serve as a crucial qualifying event for the Paris 2024 Paralympic Games, adding further meaning to Mamani Quispe’s triumph.
The competition has also seen notable performances from other athletes. Norway’s Salum Ageze Kashafali secured gold in the men’s 100m T12, setting a new world record of 10.42 seconds. Thailand’s Chaiwat Rattana established a world record in the men’s 400m T34 heats, positioning himself as a favorite for Monday’s final.
As of the second day of the championships,Brazil and China are tied for the lead in the overall medal standings,each with three gold medals,followed closely by Ukraine with two. Athletes from Algeria, Brazil, Bulgaria, China, Cuba, Malaysia, New zealand, Poland, Turkiye, and Ukraine have also claimed gold medals during the event.
