Macron Condemns U.S. Ambassador’s Criticism as France Moves to recognize Palestinian State
NEW YORK – French President Emmanuel macron has deemed “unacceptable” criticism leveled by U.S.Ambassador to Israel Jacob Kushner regarding France’s intention to recognize a Palestinian state, according to remarks made at the United Nations General Assembly in New York. The move comes as France and Saudi Arabia advance a phased plan for peace between Israel and Hamas, and a potential two-state solution.
the high-level gathering includes representatives from the U.K., Australia, and Canada, all considering joining France in recognizing Palestinian statehood. Currently, 147 UN member states recognize the right of Palestinians to self-determination, but recognition from Western powers like France and the U.K. carries symbolic weight and signals growing international isolation of the current Israeli government, which has continued its military operations in Gaza for nearly two years.
The French-Saudi plan hinges on several phases: a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, the release of hostages held by Hamas as the October 7, 2023 attack on Israel, and the restoration of humanitarian aid to Gaza. Macron stated that France would only open an embassy in a Palestinian state after thes conditions are met. Subsequent phases involve Gaza’s reconstruction, governance, and ultimately, a two-state solution.
Macron also secured a public denouncement of Hamas from Palestinian Authority Prime minister Mahmoud Abbas, 90, who governs the occupied West Bank, along with Abbas’s agreement to reform the Authority and hold elections. “Recognizing the Palestinian state today is the only way to provide a political solution to a situation which has to stop,” Macron said.
The French position contrasts sharply with the Trump management, which previously blocked visas for Palestinian Authority members attempting to attend diplomatic gatherings. Despite President Trump’s recent statements acknowledging starvation in Gaza and urging Israel to end the war, prime Minister Netanyahu has disregarded American appeals. Trump recently expressed dissatisfaction with Netanyahu’s decision to bomb U.S. ally Qatar during Hamas negotiations regarding a U.S.-proposed ceasefire.
The current U.S. administration also appears to oppose the creation of a Palestinian State, with Trump supporting proposals to relocate Gazans to other countries. The U.S. remains a strong supporter and primary weapons provider for israel.
