Louisville Facebook Group Mobilizes to Feed First Responders at UPS Plane Crash Site
LOUISVILLE, Ky. – A Louisville woman leveraged a local Facebook group to quickly organize and deliver 200 meals to first responders working at the site of Wednesday’s UPS plane crash. Alexis desmond, administrator of the “Free Food louisville” group, and her husband personally transported the food directly to personnel at the crash site, navigating beyond security barricades.
Desmond founded “Free Food louisville” with a friend to connect community members with free meal opportunities and food drives. The group has seen rapid growth, recently surpassing 1,000 members. “My friend and I started this group…trying to feed our neighbors and community and make a small difference where we can, and that turned into, within the past week, over 1,000 people joining the group and participating,” Desmond said.
The meals provided included hot dogs, chips, water, and electrolytes, intended to provide sustenance and a morale boost to those working long hours. “Just knowing I’m helping people not go hungry and I’m feeding people is enough for me,” Desmond stated.
Additional support is coming from local restaurant Wild Eggs, which is donating over 200 breakfast burritos and sandwiches for delivery to first responders on Sunday. Desmond encourages others to contribute to relief efforts by donating food to local food pantries or police precincts.
