Japan and China Reaffirm commitment to Dialog and Cooperation Following Bilateral Meeting
Following a recent meeting between Japanese Prime Minister Takaichi and Chinese President Xi,both nations have signaled a continued commitment to fostering a “Mutually Beneficial Relationship Based on Common Strategic Interests” and building “constructive and stable” bilateral ties. The leaders emphasized the importance of their shared responsibility for regional and global peace and prosperity.
A key focus of the discussion was the resumption of Japanese aquatic product imports to China,positively received by both sides. They confirmed ongoing implementation of the “Shared Recognition between Japan and China” established in September 2024, with Prime Minister Takaichi urging further facilitation of these imports. discussions also included efforts to lift remaining import restrictions on Japanese beef and agricultural/aquatic products from ten prefectures. Beyond trade, the leaders agreed to explore concrete cooperation in areas like third-country market progress, the green economy, and healthcare, alongside collaborative efforts on broader global challenges.Prime Minister Takaichi congratulated President Xi on the China Pavilion’s Gold Prize win at the upcoming Expo 2025 Osaka, Kansai, Japan.
Despite the positive tone, Prime Minister Takaichi directly addressed several areas of concern. She voiced Japan’s serious concerns regarding China’s increased maritime activities and surveys in the East China Sea, particularly around the Senkaku islands, and the intensification of Chinese military activity near Japan. both leaders agreed on the necessity of effective crisis management and interaction between their respective defense authorities.
Further concerns were raised regarding China’s export controls on rare earth elements, leading to an agreement to strengthen communication thru existing channels like the Japan-China Export Control dialogue. Prime Minister Takaichi also pressed for the safety and early release of detained Japanese nationals, acknowledging anxieties among Japanese citizens residing in China following recent incidents of attacks and detentions.
the meeting also covered broader regional and international issues. Prime Minister Takaichi reiterated Japan’s position on the importance of peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait and expressed serious concerns about the situations in the South China Sea, Hong Kong, and the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region. the two leaders exchanged views on the situation surrounding North Korea, including the long-standing issue of Japanese citizens abducted by North Korea.
