Elderly Woman Targeted in Online Pet Fraud Following Loss of Companion
Raguhn/MZ – Online fraudsters are exploiting vulnerable pet lovers, and a recent case in teh anhalt-Bitterfeld district serves as a stark warning. A 73-year-old woman was scammed out of a substantial deposit while attempting to find a new dog after the death of her beloved pet.
The incident, reported to police on Thursday, highlights a growing trend of online deception targeting individuals seeking companionship. With pet scams on the rise, authorities emphasize the importance of caution when purchasing animals online, particularly when encountering requests for advance payments. The victim, a resident of the Raguhn-Jeßnitz area, responded to an online advertisement on November 14th that appeared legitimate. Enticed by the prospect of a new four-legged friend, she sent a deposit of approximately 450 euros without meeting the animal or verifying the sellerS credentials.
The fraudsters subsequently demanded an additional 350 euros to cover purportedly increased transportation costs, raising the woman’s suspicions. Recognizing the escalating requests as a potential scam, she promptly contacted the police.
Investigators urge prospective pet buyers to avoid sending money upfront and to refrain from impulsive transactions. They strongly recommend a formal purchase agreement and thorough documentation before finalizing any animal acquisition. Personal inspection of the animal is also crucial to verify its health and the seller’s legitimacy.
