Hong Kong Fire Death Toll Climbs to 65
HONG KONG - The death toll from a massive fire that engulfed a high-rise building in Hong Kong has risen to 65, authorities confirmed today. The blaze, which broke out Monday, tore through the 16-story building in Yau Ma Tei, a densely populated district known for its older buildings and narrow streets.
More than 760 firefighters were deployed to extinguish the fire, supported by approximately 400 police officers. The building had been undergoing renovations and was covered in bamboo scaffolding at the time of the incident.
Authorities have launched an examination into the cause of the fire and will examine the safety standards of the bamboo scaffolding and green netting surrounding the building. Three men have been arrested on suspicion of manslaughter, according to the South China Morning Post.
