LONDON (AP) – German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier will undertake a state visit to the United Kingdom in early December, Buckingham Palace announced monday, marking a significant moment in Anglo-German relations.
The visit, scheduled for December 3-5 adn hosted by king Charles III and Queen Camilla at Windsor Castle, will be the first formal state visit by a German head of state to the U.K. since 1958. This rare honor underscores the enduring partnership between the two nations, built on centuries of shared history and increasingly vital modern cooperation.
State visits are a cornerstone of diplomatic protocol, offering a platform to celebrate alliances and foster deeper understanding. The itinerary will include customary displays of British pageantry – military salutes, carriage processions, and a state banquet – reflecting the importance placed on the occasion.
The invitation from King Charles follows his own state visit to Germany in 2023, a trip intended to strengthen ties with the European Union and demonstrate the U.K.’s commitment to international engagement.During that visit, the king highlighted the historical connections between the two countries, including his familial ties to the house of Hannover, as well as the current strength of economic, scientific, cultural, and military collaboration.
Invitations for state visits are extended by the monarch upon the proposal of the U.K. government. The upcoming visit is expected to reinforce the close bonds between the United Kingdom and Germany at a time of complex geopolitical challenges.
