Eagles Seek first Win of Season as Ave Maria visits Alico Arena
FORT MYERS, Fla. – Teh Florida Gulf Coast University women’s basketball team will host Ave Maria thursday night at 7 p.m.in Alico Arena, aiming to bounce back from a season-opening loss and extend its dominant record against the Gyrenes. This contest represents an opportunity for FGCU to establish momentum early in the 2025-26 season and build upon its strong home-court advantage.
FGCU holds a perfect 7-0 all-time record against Ave Maria, having previously defeated them 82-43 last year. Historically, the Eagles have consistently limited the Gyrenes’ scoring, holding them under 45 points in seven of their eight matchups.The eagles are 70-24 all-time following a loss and 4-2 in games after a season-opening defeat.
The Eagles are looking to rebound after falling to davidson in their season opener. Sinai Douglas led FGCU in that contest with 15 points and nine rebounds, while Anna Mortag and Nay Staton each contributed eight points.
Ave Maria enters Thursday’s game with a 1-2 record, most recently securing an 84-61 victory over Florida National. Ashley Chilson powered the Gyrenes in that win with 22 points and 10 rebounds, supported by Elena Barnes’ 16 points and 11 boards.
FGCU will focus on improving ball security,increasing assists,playing at a faster tempo,and asserting themselves inside on both offense and defense. Following the matchup with ave Maria, the Eagles will travel to Fairfax, Virginia, to face George mason on November 19 at 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
