Facebook Revamps Feed to Prioritize Reels, Reconnect Users
MENLO PARK, CA – February 29, 2024 – Facebook is implementing a series of updates aimed at boosting video content and fostering stronger social connections, signaling a renewed effort to compete in the short-form video landscape and recapture its original user experience. The changes include algorithmic adjustments to prioritize recent Reels, increased user control over feed content, and features designed to spark conversations around shared interests.
The updated Facebook feed is designed to showcase more content users want to see,now surfacing 50% more Reels published on the same day. Users also gain greater control through the ability to indicate “not Interested” on Reels or flag irrelevant comments, allowing for more personalized feeds. The Save feature has also been updated to further refine content recommendations based on user preferences.
A key component of the revamp focuses on strengthening social connections. “Friend bubbles” - mirroring a feature already available on Instagram – now display which Reels friends have liked, appearing in the bottom left corner of a Reel and enabling instant chat access about the video.
“Seeing likes from your friends has always been core to the Facebook experience, and we are continuing to build features – like bubbles - that bring us back to our roots,” Facebook stated in a recent blog post.
Alongside these features, AI-powered search suggestions are being introduced to help users explore topics they’re passionate about.
These updates could benefit artists seeking to expand their reach. Increased visibility for recent Reels and features encouraging discussion present opportunities to engage with fans in real-time and build community. While TikTok and Instagram Reels currently dominate the short-form video market,Facebook’s changes suggest a renewed competitive push.
