Europe faces an “existential” threat from geopolitical rivals adn must act decisively with sweeping changes-including massive investment in nuclear power and deregulation of digital markets-to regain competitiveness, according to a new report from the Tony blair Institute for Global Change. The report, released Monday, echoes recommendations from a similar analysis last year by former European Central Bank President Mario Draghi, signaling growing consensus around the urgency of the situation.
The Institute’s proposals, co-authored by former Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin and former Italian Prime Minister Matteo Renzi, call for replicating strategies employed in the United States to bolster Europe’s technological standing. The report advocates for the construction of “gigafactories” to increase production capacity and a notable overhaul of regulations hindering digital innovation. The Tony blair Institute for Global Change, founded in recent years, now employs 900 people and advises over 45 countries.
