Slovak Defender Denis Vavro reflects on EURO 2024, National Team Competition, and unexpected Quarantine
Slovakian defender Denis Vavro discussed his experiences at EURO 2024, the competition for a starting role in the national team alongside Milan Škriniar, and a surprising period of quarantine in Russia during a recent interview.
Vavro recalled enjoying the second EURO tournament, specifically referencing England’s 1-2 extra-time victory over Slovakia in the round of 16, noting Bellingham’s goal. “It still hurts, but I don’t think we have anything to be ashamed of,” he stated.He also recounted an initial plan to travel to Russia that was ultimately abandoned, remembering it now “with a smile.”
Regarding his playing style, Vavro credited Adrián Guľa in Žilina with developing his long passing game, initially necessitated by the fast pace on artificial grass. He noted adapting this skill in Denmark, where coaches initially hesitated before recognizing its effectiveness. He described receiving specific instructions from the bench, citing a match against Luxembourg where he was repeatedly directed to utilize long passes, with the entire halftime tactical preparation focused on his distribution.
Vavro acknowledged the strong competition for the second center-back position alongside milan Škriniar, mentioning Adam Obert and Ľubomír Šatka as contenders. He recalled past competition, referencing his first national team call-up alongside Martin Škrtel and Milan Škriniar. He emphasized Coach Calzona’s approach of giving opportunities to all players,fostering a competitive surroundings. “Nobody knows who is going to play until the last moment,” he said, adding that he supports teammates whether selected or not.
Looking ahead to the upcoming World Cup qualification match against Germany,Vavro revealed information from his club,Wolfsburg,indicating the German team is heavily focused on preparing for their rematch against Slovakia. He stated they are approaching the luxembourg match with less intensity, but will show more respect for Slovakia than in their first encounter. “They will have more respect for us and it’s up to us how we handle it.There is a chance,so you have to fight for it,” he concluded.
