“It’s Amazing”: Georgia Recovery center Prioritizes Mothers and Children
DEKALB COUNTY, GA – A DeKalb County recovery center is offering a unique model of care, allowing mothers battling addiction to heal while remaining close to their children. Breakthru house provides residential treatment and support services specifically designed to address the complex needs of mothers seeking recovery, aiming to break cycles of trauma and keep families intact.
The program addresses a critical gap in addiction treatment, recognizing the profound impact of parental separation on both mothers and children. Nationally, the opioid crisis and rising rates of substance use disorder have led to increased involvement of child protective services, frequently enough resulting in family separation. Breakthru House offers a pathway to reunification and sustained recovery by providing a safe, supportive environment where mothers can address their addiction and rebuild parenting skills.
Tramisha Mullings, a resident at Breakthru House, shared a painful chapter of her journey. “I lost my two oldest kids as of domestic violence,” she said, visibly emotional. “They whent to school and said they where tired of seeing me getting hands put on me, so I lost them.” Mullings later gave birth to a daughter who entered the foster care system due to her opioid use during pregnancy; the child is now being raised by Mullings’ grandmother. “I have shame and guilt behind my drug usage,” Mullings stated. ”I’m working through my issues and want to have another chance at being a mother again.”
For another resident, identified as Rollen, the program has fostered a sense of hope. She is approaching a important milestone in her recovery. “Coming up in December, I’ll have nine months clean on the 28th,” Rollen shared. “It feels grate.”
Breakthru House staff emphasize the vital role of programs like theirs, not only in facilitating individual recovery but also in preserving family bonds. The center’s approach acknowledges that supporting mothers is a crucial step toward breaking intergenerational cycles of addiction and trauma.
