Cristiano Ronaldo Leads 2024 Ranking of the World’s Highest-Paid Athletes
NEW YORK – May 16, 2024 – Football superstar Cristiano Ronaldo has secured the top spot on the 2024 list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, amassing total earnings of $260 million. The ranking, released today, underscores the continued financial dominance of soccer’s elite and the growing commercial power of athletes across multiple sports.
Ronaldo’s earnings represent a significant increase over previous years, fueled by his move to Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr and lucrative endorsement deals. This list provides a snapshot of the evolving landscape of athlete compensation, where on-field salaries are increasingly supplemented-and sometimes surpassed-by off-field income. The surge in earnings for athletes like Ronaldo reflects a broader trend of globalization and the expanding market for sports entertainment, impacting team valuations, broadcast rights, and sponsorship opportunities.
The Portuguese forward’s $260 million total includes $200 million from salary and bonuses, and an estimated $60 million from endorsements and other ventures. He is followed closely by golfer Jon Rahm, who earned $218 million, largely due to a reported $200 million signing bonus with LIV Golf.
Basketball’s biggest stars also featured prominently in the rankings. LeBron james landed in fourth place with total earnings of $128.2 million, while stephen Curry secured ninth position at $102 million. The NBA’s global appeal continues to translate into considerable endorsement opportunities for its players, complementing their substantial contracts.
NFL quarterback Lamar Jackson rounded out the top 10, earning $100 million in 2024 following a career year and a landmark contract extension. His inclusion highlights the increasing international commercial value of American football.
