ECOWAS Conference to Tackle Lassa Fever Threat in West Africa
Abidjan, Ivory Coast – September 7, 2025 – Abidjan will host the 2nd International ECOWAS Conference on Lassa Fever (ELFIC 2025) from September 8-11, bringing together global experts to bolster regional and international efforts against the deadly viral disease endemic to West Africa.Organized by the West african Health Association (OOAS) and key international partners, the conference centers around the theme ”Beyond Borders: Strengthening Regional Cooperation to Combat lassa Fever and Emerging Infectious Diseases.” The event aims to foster collaboration between researchers, scientists, policymakers, and public health officials in the fight against this notable public health challenge.
The opening ceremony will be led by Ivorian Prime Minister Robert Beugré Mambé, and will feature addresses from prominent figures including Dr.Melchior Athanase JC Aïssi, Director General of OOAS; Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Minister of Health; and Pierre N’gou Dimba, Ivory Coast’s Minister of Health.
ELFIC 2025 will feature a robust program of panel discussions and technical workshops focusing on critical areas such as advancements in vaccine development and diagnostics, effective community engagement strategies, improved epidemic surveillance and response systems, and the creation of robust policy frameworks for long-term disease control. An accompanying exhibition will showcase cutting-edge innovations from research institutions, NGOs, and the private sector.
Lassa fever poses a considerable threat to public health across West Africa,wiht approximately 20% of infections progressing to a severe,often fatal,form.the lack of currently approved vaccines and antiviral treatments exacerbates the disease’s socio-economic impact, notably in vulnerable rural communities.
The conference is expected to draw participation from health ministers representing all ECOWAS member states, alongside strategic partners including the World Health organization (WHO), the World Bank, the African Development Bank (BAD), and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
This gathering underscores the urgent need for a coordinated, multi-faceted approach to combat Lassa fever and strengthen preparedness for future emerging infectious disease threats in the region.
