CHICAGO – A man was struck by gunfire from a Chicago police officer Tuesday morning after fleeing from officers in the Washington Park neighborhood, police said. The man sustained graze wounds and is in good condition.
The incident unfolded around 11:50 a.m. in the 5600 block of South Michigan Avenue when uniformed officers attempted to stop a man they suspected of carrying a firearm. According to Chicago Police Department statements, the man ran from officers, initiating a foot pursuit. An officer observed the man allegedly displaying a gun and issued verbal commands, which were not followed. the officer then discharged their weapon, grazing the man in the abdomen and right arm.
Officers immediately provided first aid before the man was transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The officer involved was also taken to a hospital for observation. A firearm was recovered at the scene, police confirmed.
The civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) is investigating the shooting, including a review of body-worn camera footage and other evidence. As per department policy, the officer who fired the weapon has been placed on routine administrative duties for at least 30 days.
