Norristown, PA – Charles‍ Johnson, a prominent Montgomery County Republican who served as Pennsylvania’s Secretary of​ Revenue during the Great Depression, died of a heart attack on ‌April⁢ 10, 1937, at Montgomery Hospital. His career marked‌ a period of significant political ‍transition in the state and nation.

Appointed Secretary ⁤of ⁣Revenue by Governor John Stuart ‌Fisher ⁣in 1929, ⁢Johnson took office as the United States braced⁢ for economic⁣ collapse. ⁣He previously held positions within the Montgomery County Republican ⁣organization, rising to lead the county’s campaign during the 1932 presidential election.Despite Franklin D.Roosevelt’s landslide‍ victory nationally, Johnson‌ successfully ​secured a ‍substantial win for Herbert hoover within Montgomery County-a testament to his local influence. Johnson remained active on the Republican‍ state committee until a stroke sidelined him in 1934.
