Canada Post Celebrates Graphic Novelists with New Stamp Series
OTTAWA – Canada Post has unveiled a new series of postage stamps honouring six acclaimed Canadian graphic novelists: Michael Nicoll Yahgulanaas, Kate Beaton, Jimmy Beaulieu, Guy Delisle, Julie Doucet, and Brian Lee O’Malley. The stamps recognize the growing importance of graphic novels as a literary art form and celebrate the unique contributions of these artists to Canadian culture.
This initiative arrives as graphic novels gain increasing recognition for their ability to tackle complex themes and reach diverse audiences. The stamps aim to elevate the profile of this medium and acknowledge the artists who are pushing creative boundaries. The series is expected to appeal to both collectors and fans of graphic literature,further solidifying the art form’s place within Canada’s artistic landscape.
Yahgulanaas, a Haida artist, is recognized for his innovative blend of Haida art and storytelling, particularly his work red: A Haida Spirit Bear Story.Kate Beaton is best known for her autobiographical graphic novel Ducks: Two Years in the Oil Sands, which won the 2023 CBC Reads competition-the first graphic novel to achieve this honor.
Montreal-based Jimmy Beaulieu has authored numerous books, including Jardin des complexes, Rôles de composition, and Non-aventures : planches à la première personne. Guy Delisle shares his travel experiences through cartoons, with his award-winning Chroniques de Jérusalem documenting his time in the Middle East, alongside visits to North Korea and myanmar.
Julie Doucet,author of Journal (2004; 365 Days,2007),received the Grand Prix for lifetime achievement at the Angoulême International Comics Festival. Brian Lee O’Malley is the creator of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels, which follow a Toronto garage band slacker and have been adapted into a film, video game, and animation series.
