Canada Post ⁢Celebrates Graphic Novelists‍ with⁣ New Stamp Series

OTTAWA – Canada Post has ‌unveiled a new series⁤ of postage stamps honouring six acclaimed Canadian ‌graphic ‌novelists: Michael Nicoll‌ Yahgulanaas, Kate Beaton, Jimmy Beaulieu, Guy Delisle, Julie Doucet, and⁣ Brian Lee O’Malley. The stamps recognize the growing importance of graphic novels as a literary ⁤art form and⁣ celebrate the⁢ unique contributions of these artists to Canadian culture.

This ‍initiative arrives as ‍graphic novels gain ​increasing recognition for their ability to tackle complex themes and ‍reach diverse audiences.‍ The stamps aim to elevate the profile of this​ medium and acknowledge the artists who are ‌pushing creative boundaries. The series is expected to appeal to both ‌collectors and fans of graphic literature,further solidifying the art form’s ⁤place within Canada’s artistic landscape.

Yahgulanaas, a ​Haida artist, is recognized‍ for his innovative blend of Haida art​ and storytelling, particularly his work red: A Haida Spirit Bear Story.Kate Beaton is best‍ known ⁢for her autobiographical graphic‍ novel Ducks: Two Years​ in the Oil Sands, which won the 2023 CBC Reads competition-the first graphic novel to ‌achieve this honor.

Montreal-based Jimmy Beaulieu has authored numerous ​books,​ including Jardin des complexes, Rôles ⁤de composition, and Non-aventures : planches à la première personne. Guy⁤ Delisle ‌shares his ‌travel⁢ experiences through cartoons, with his award-winning Chroniques de Jérusalem documenting his ​time in the Middle East, alongside visits to North Korea and myanmar.

Julie Doucet,author of ⁢ Journal (2004; 365 Days,2007),received the Grand Prix for lifetime achievement at​ the ​Angoulême International Comics Festival. Brian Lee O’Malley ​is the creator of the Scott Pilgrim ‍ graphic⁤ novels, which follow⁢ a Toronto⁤ garage band slacker ‌and have⁣ been adapted into a film, video game, ​and animation series.
