Baya Bouzar, known professionally as Biyouna, distinguished herself across multiple artistic disciplines, from Algerian ballets and women’s orchestras to television and film.She gained international recognition with her role in Nadir Moknèche‘s *M’s Haremme Ottoman* (1999) and continued to challenge societal norms with daring performances, most notably in *At my age I still hide to smoke* (2017). Biyouna’s decision to stay in Algeria throughout the years of Islamist terror, refusing offers of exile, resonated deeply with her countrymen and cemented her status as a symbol of resilience.
Biyouna’s career blossomed internationally following *M’s Haremme Ottoman*, filmed in Morocco and France, where she worked alongside Carmen Maura and honed her acting skills.
