Recent cancellations of performances by Japanese artists in China, including a highly anticipated concert by singer Ayumi Hamasaki, underscore escalating diplomatic tensions between the two nations. In some instances, fans waited outside venues past scheduled start times before being informed of the cancellations. The visual kei band JILUKA experienced the cancellation of both their Shanghai tour finale and a planned fan meetup on the same day as Hamasaki’s announcement, also utilizing the force majeure justification.
Beyond live music, Chinese regulators have also frozen approvals for new Japanese films and delayed releases, including the latest Crayon Shin-chan movie and the live-action Cells at Work! film. However, not all Japanese media is affected; films like the latest Demon Slayer installment continue to be screened in Chinese cinemas. A concert in Shanghai featuring Akanishi Jin and Nishikido Ryo was permitted to proceed, albeit under increased security, suggesting a fluctuating and unpredictable request of restrictions.
The situation stems from comments made earlier this month by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi to Japan’s parliament. She stated that a military attack on taiwan coudl create a ”survival-threatening situation” for Japan, a term defined under 2015 security law as a scenario triggering potential Self-defense Forces support for allies like the United States.
Beijing responded by denouncing the remarks as interference in its internal affairs and demanding a retraction. Subsequently, China issued travel advisories discouraging its citizens from visiting or studying in Japan and has begun restricting imported goods. Cultural activities have become a prominent area affected by these measures.
Industry professionals report widespread uncertainty due to a lack of clear guidance from Chinese authorities. Months of planning can be overturned with little to no notice, and the future of permissions for Japanese artists remains unclear. Chinese fans have expressed a range of reactions, from frustration over last-minute cancellations to support for the restrictions. Concerns also exist within fan communities regarding potential broader impacts on Japanese-influenced subcultures like anime, gaming, and live music.
Hamasaki’s team is currently focused on assisting ticket holders and acknowledging the efforts of those involved in preparing for the cancelled concert.The possibility of future performances by Hamasaki and other Japanese artists in mainland China remains uncertain.
