These films will be released in theaters this week | NOW

A comedy starring Robert De Niro, the latest film adaptation of David Copperfield and a romantic drama with Katie Holmes are on the agenda for new releases this week. Nine titles will be released in theaters on Thursday. View which films are involved below.

The War with Grandpa (2020) – comedy

First, Peter (Oakes Fegley) is thrilled to hear that his grandfather (Robert De Niro) is coming to live with him. But when it turns out that the kid himself has to move to the scary attic, he and his friends come up with a plan to reclaim his own room. Director Tim Hill made earlier Alvin and the Chipmunks in The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run.

The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019) – comedy

The young writer David Copperfield looks back on his life in nineteenth-century London, when he fled from his nasty stepfather and ended up in various situations. The famous story of Charles Dickens has already been made into many films and is given to Armando Iannucci (The Death of Stalin, Veep) an energetic and absurdist character.

Shirley (2020) – thriller

Horror writer Shirley Jackson (Elizabeth Moss), known for The Haunting of Hill House, is working on a new book in this biographical film. She is disturbed by the visit of a newly married couple, but the horror author also discovers that the new guests could well become a source of inspiration. The thriller Shirley won one of the special jury awards at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

The Secret: Dare to Dream (2020) – drama

Miranda (Katie Holmes) appears to have been born before the accident. With a high debt, three children to take care of and major hurricane damage, she never seems to be able to get out of her downward spiral. But stranger Bray proves that you can also view the world from a different angle, although he seems to be hiding something himself in the meantime. The Secret: Dare to Dream is based on the bestseller The Secret van Rhonda Byrne.

The Tobacconist (2018) – drama

In 1930s Vienna, teenager Franz is apprenticed to a cigar dealer. Sigmund Freud turns out to be a regular there, which leads to a friendship between the seventeen-year-old boy and the famous psychoanalyst. Meanwhile, the danger of the advancing Nazis in Austria looms. The Tobacconist is based on the book The Viennese cigar farmer van Robert Seethaler.

Atlantis (2019) – drama

Ukraine is completely destroyed in 2025. The war with Russia is over, but the population has had to pay a high price for it. Ex-soldier Sergiy joins an organization that salvages the bodies of soldiers, drawing more and more to an archaeologist who is just as damaged as he is. Atlantis won the Orizzonti Prize at the Venice Film Festival last year.

Valley of the Gods (2019) – sciencefiction

Josh Hartnett plays a lyricist in this science fiction drama who delves into the biography of the richest man on earth. The prosperity of Wes Tauros (John Malkovich), meanwhile, appears to be at the expense of the Valley of the Gods, the iconic terrain of the Navajo Indians. Polish director Lech Majewski previously made the highly stylized, among other things The Mill and the Cross (2011) with Rutger Hauer.

White Riot (2019) – documentary

Rock Against Racism was founded in 1976 in response to racist attacks and far-right politics. The cultural movement, supported by The Clash and Elvis Costello, among others, started out as a local initiative but grew into Britain’s largest anti-racism movement. This documentary looks back on that revolutionary time.

Curators talk about their work and provide insights into Da Vinci’s painting techniques and world-famous art.
