The organizer of Wimbledon will appeal against the fine from the WTA for the exclusion of Russians and Belarusians

“The legal process has already started, so I can’t comment further on that. We regret the reaction of both circuits (ATP and WTA), but we stand by the decision,” the AP agency quoted the executive director of the All England Club, Sally Bolton.

The British Tennis Association (LTA) was also punished for the ban, to which the WTA imposed a fine of 750,000 dollars. The LTA also intends to appeal against this. As well as against financial sanctions from the management of the men’s ATP circuit.

Wimbledon organizers announced the exclusion of Russians and Belarusians based on the British government’s recommendations at the end of April. The ATP and WTA opposed this and decided that this year’s event will not be played for points in the world rankings.

The exclusion prevented, among others, world number one and reigning US Open winner Daniil Medvedev from Russia or two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenkova from Belarus from starting on the Wimbledon grass.
