The Opel brand officially launched the sixth-generation Astra model on the Czech market yesterday. For the first time ever, we collected a package of knowledge and impressions live. In addition, we know the Czech prices of all currently available variants.
The sixth successor of the Opel Astra, following on from several successful decades of the brand in the given automotive segment, introduced itself to Prague yesterday afternoon. We were able to inspect the two five-door hatchbacks together with the camera in advance and collected the first impressions and interesting things for you undisturbed. The novelty is characterized by a brand new design, generous equipment and a wide range of available drives. But let’s go in order.
It shines like a flagship
Following in the footsteps of other modern Opel, the Astra uses the Opel Vizor’s bow and relies on the colorful body colors, making it hard to miss in the car park. The new face combines the mask and headlights into one unit, while the lighting technology is fully diode in all equipment. Higher versions have an additional (highest standard) Intelli-Lux LED Pixel headlights with eighty-four diode elements in each light. As a result, for example, the covering of oncoming vehicles with automatic high beams is very smooth. The compact hatchback borrows the technology from the flagship Insignia.
Depending on the equipment, the novelty gets wheels from sixteen to eighteen inches, in all cases we are talking about light alloy tires. With a length of 4374 mm, the car is only four millimeters longer than its predecessor. But beware, the front overhang was significantly shortened and the wheelbase itself improved to 2675 mm (+13 mm), so he called the sibling models Peugeot 308 a DS 4. At the same time, the novelty is 51 millimeters wider (1860 mm) and 15 mm (1470 mm) lower, which, together with the horizontal design elements and the extended fenders, emphasizes its more stride stance and more dynamic proportions.
The external appearance is an interesting mix of sleekness and sharp shapes and indentations. I was very impressed by the car, I liked the golden piece a bit more on the illuminated exhibition area. You won’t confuse the back part with your predecessor either, the narrow lines of the lights are accompanied by a distinctive Astra logo and the inscription Astra on the fifth door. Below them is a luggage compartment with a volume of 422 liters, the floor of which can be placed in two positions, or left “open” when loading things from below.
If I adjust the driver’s seat to my 178 cm, I still have a few centimeters behind me in front of my knees and above my head. In addition, the backrests of the front seats are cut out from behind, so you can roll out comfortably and your legs are not uncomfortably buried in the mass. In addition, the walkers fit perfectly under the front seats, although the crew’s front seat is located 12 millimeters closer to the ground for a sportier feel.
Digitization with buttons
The cabin also went through a revolution. I have already bitten sitting in the front, I would also like to mention comfortable seats with an ergonomic AGR certificate, which in addition to heating also have ventilation and massage functions in higher equipment. Incidentally, the redesigned steering wheel is also heated, whose just-thick wreath fits nicely in the hand and although it may not look like that in the photos, it retains the classic buttons instead of the touch surfaces.
As standard, the driver’s station consists of two 10-inch screens, a solution called the Pure Panel. The creators talk about a kind of interior detox that has undergone maximum simplification and got rid of a lot of buttons. I did not examine the photos of the cabin in detail before the premiere, so a pleasant surprise awaited me live. The Astra has retained buttons for controlling basic functions, such as setting the temperature or heating the seats. She deserves great praise for not drowning these options in the menu of the multimedia system. The competition could learn!
In the most frequently touched places, we find pleasant and soft materials to the touch. The center console is also simplified with a miniature automatic transmission selector, driving mode selector and parking brake. The drink holders can be covered with a roller shutter, small necessities can be stored in the armrest and the phone can be placed on a rubberized area under the middle screen.
A novelty for the Astra is, for example, a redesigned infotainment system with voice control, a 360-degree camera, air quality control and a new head-up display. The multimedia system supports smartphone mirroring via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto wirelessly in all equipment, which is definitely not standard today.
Combi soon, electro next year
The motor pallet has not been a secret for some time. The base is a 1.2 Turbo three-cylinder petrol engine with outputs of 81 and 96 kW. Those interested in diesel can reach for a four-cylinder turbodiesel with a volume of 1.5 liters and a power of 96 kW. Depending on the choice of engine, a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic transmission is available. In all cases, only the front wheels are turned. Electrified power units currently represent two plug-in hybrids with a system output of 132 or 165 kW. The battery with a capacity of 12.4 kWh is enough for 60 km of electric range according to WLTP. Next year will expand the offer to include a pure electric car, the parameters of which we do not yet know.
Astra is based on the third-generation EMP2 platform of the Stellantis Group. However, Opel points out that the shock absorbers, suspension or steering match as you wish at home in Rüsselsheim. The torsional rigidity of the model has improved by 14% between generations, and the creators say that the novelty was designed from the beginning to withstand even the maximum speeds during the movement on the German motorway. But we will personally be able to see for yourself later.
The first cars will appear on the Czech market in April. Just two months later, we can expect the arrival of a more practical station wagon, which has already officially introduced itself to the world. As I mentioned, fans of clean electric cars will wait until 2023. The good news for them is that the sixth generation Astra will arrive with electric drive in both body variants.
During the Czech premiere, we were also introduced to the news price list. At the same time, the basic price of the Astra is managed to be kept below the magic limit of half a million crowns after the discount. But beware, in the introductory equipment Edition for CZK 479,990 there is definitely no poverty. It includes 16 “alloy wheels (17” for plug-in hybrid), LED lighting technology, digital driver’s station with two 10-inch screens, front and rear parking sensors, fog lights, keyless start, single-zone automatic air conditioning and electric parking brake.
Higher design Elegance shoes seventeen, has a 180-degree parking camera, tinted windows, adaptive cruise control, EGR driver’s seat, eight colors of ambient lighting, keyless unlocking and dual-zone air conditioning. Other equipment GS Line gets a specific design of 17 “wheels, black painted roof, sports front bumper, 360-degree camera, sports seats with heating (incl. steering wheel), black roof upholstery or aluminum sports pedals. The highest performance is called Ultimate and in addition to the shoeed eighteen, it receives chrome exterior elements, Matrix LED Pixel lights, a panoramic wiper window, a head-up display, Alcantara upholstery and both front seats with AGR certification.
