The long-awaited sharp squirt offers 204 power, manual shifting, a self-locking differential and maximum emphasis on driving pleasure.
During recent rides with the new generation Hyundai i20 in Germany, we were given a unique opportunity to see in advance a brand new sharp hatchback Hyundai i20 N, to which we received an amazing explanation from one of the project managers. And from his enthusiasm, it was clear that this car was really developed with enthusiasm and for enthusiastic drivers.
But let’s start with the exterior, whose modifications should emphasize the sporty character of the car. This is evident from the modified front bumper, whose radiator grille has segments shaped in the style of a checkerboard flag. There are also modified shapes, highlighted suction openings and of course there is a small N in the character.
In the car in the photos, you can notice the specific Hyundai N: Performance Blue paint, which is complemented by red and black accessories. The red line, which stretches from the front bumper, through special sill extensions, to the rear bumper and thus lines the entire car, is especially noteworthy.
The new 18 “cast discs also stand out from the profile, which you will not put on another i20. The sharp i20 N got a wheel hub with five mounting bolts, while the classic i20 has only four bolts. Larger and more powerful disc brakes also peek out from behind the cast wheels.
At the rear, the newly shaped rear bumper, which has been given, for example, an integrated diffuser or a triangular rear fog light – a small reference to the Hyunda i30N and i30 Fastback N. models are also new rear lamps, which are dimmed which is standard and really functional – it should improve stability at higher speeds.
After opening the door, the sports-shaped seats with integrated headrest and the distinctive shaping of the seat and backrest attract attention. The driver also gets a brand new two-spoke steering wheel, equipped with a pair of programmable N buttons and a button for automatic intermediate gases, or a new gear lever head, metal pedals and a black cap. The display of the digital instrument panel is also new, and the functions of the on-board computer are also new.
But let’s go back to the body itself, which, compared to the traditional Hyundai i20, is reinforced and equipped with more welds. The complete chassis was also modified, which, in addition to reinforcement, also received new shock absorbers and springs. The ground clearance should be reduced by approx. 10 mm. The rear axle is solved by a torsion bar.
The already mentioned more powerful disc brakes should have a sharper onset and their diameter has increased to 320 mm, ie an increase of 40 mm compared to the classic i20. The C-MDPS control system has also been modified, which should guarantee greater stability at higher speeds and immediate response at lower speeds. In addition, a mechanical self-locking differential will be available as an option.
But now let’s finally move on to the greatest source of joy – the engine. Under the hood of the Hyundai i20 N is a brand new supercharged four-cylinder 1.6 T-GDI with the internal designation Gamma II. The supercharging system works with a turbocharger and intercooler, but the water pump, which was developed only for the i20 N model, is of interest.
The engine works with a fuel injection pressure of up to 350 Bar, which should guarantee fast reactions and efficient preparation of the fuel-air mixture. CVVD (variable valve timing) technology should then guarantee an improvement in consumption of up to 3 percent compared to engines without this technology.
But you are certainly interested in other numbers than economy. So – the new Hyundai i20 N will offer a maximum output of 150 kW (204 hp) and a maximum torque of up to 275 Nm. The transmission of power to the wheels is taken care of exclusively by a six-speed manual transmission, which will be the only choice for the i20 N. If you would like a vending machine, you are not the right customer for this car and you should look for the i30 N, it was said during the presentation.
The manual transmission is based on standard production, but has received several improvements. It uses, for example, a reinforced clutch, reinforced synchronous and other reinforced details, which should withstand high torque and load during the Launch Control function. In addition, the space for the oil filling has also been modified.
Parameters such as acceleration and maximum speed are currently referred to as preliminary – after all, production should not start until February next year, and until then it may change slightly. So far, we are talking about acceleration from 0 to 100 km / h in 6.7 seconds and the maximum speed should be 230 km / h.
But there is already talk of a final curb weight of up to 1,200 kilograms, which in combination with an output of around 205 horsepower should mean an output of about 171 horsepower per ton. In the segment, this should be the best ratio, which will also contribute to better manageability.
However, during the presentation we were told several times that the new i20 was designed and tuned primarily with an emphasis on driving pleasure, not the best times on the circuit. It should be a car you won’t want to get out of. A car that will force you to look for new routes where you can have fun behind the wheel.
This should be supported by a range of technical and technological conveniences. From the automatic inter-gas function, which is activated by a special button on the steering wheel, through Launch Control mode, variable exhaust sound, calibration for left foot braking, indicator for correct shifting, fan to suppress cold engine cooling / warm engine cooling after removing ignition keys, etc. ..
The driver will also have five driving modes, which are selected via a special mode N Grin Control System. In addition to the traditional “Normal”, “Eco”, “Sport” and “N” modes, customers will also have the “N Custom” mode, which allows individual adjustment of five car features – from engine response, through fully switchable ESC, engine sound, control up to the function of intermediate gases. The settings are made via a new web interface, which will also be available in the future for the i30 N models.
