The Macallan Launches Carta Nautica Collection for Whisky Collectors
The Macallan has introduced the Carta Nautica collection, a new series of four single malt Scotch whiskies that utilize a dual-maturation process involving both sherry-seasoned oak casks from Jerez de la Frontera and North American bourbon casks. The inaugural release, a 1987 vintage, is bottled at 45.2% ABV.
The 1987 Vintage Launch
Leading the new collection is The Macallan Carta Nautica Distilled in 1987. This 38-year-old single malt marks the beginning of a vintage-focused series. According to the distillery, the whisky offers a profile defined by notes of creamy vanilla, caramelised peaches, rich oak, and tropical pineapple, with secondary hints of rose and pink grapefruit. On the palate, the expression presents antique oak, orange oil, berry compote, and nectarines, finishing with wood spice and sultanas.
The Transatlantic Maturation Process
The collection draws its name from the Spanish term for nautical charts. The Macallan’s Whisky Mastery Team developed an unconventional maturation cycle to create these expressions. The process begins in Spain with sherry-seasoned oak, followed by a secondary maturation period in casks that previously held North American bourbon. The distillery notes that this journey across the Atlantic is intended to combine the depth and richness of sherry casks with the brightness and complexity associated with bourbon influences.
Mythical Guidance and Nautical Inspiration
The branding of the Carta Nautica collection is centered on the concept of a guided passage. The packaging and narrative are inspired by historical maritime charts used by seafarers to navigate unknown waters. The Macallan states that the collection is represented by mythical characters designed to embody the distillery’s “Six Pillars” and its approach to whisky production. This thematic focus on exploration and tradition is intended to reflect the physical journey of the oak staves and casks across the Atlantic Ocean, whether destined for Scotland or Jerez de la Frontera.
Collection Remains Exclusive to Travel Retail Boutiques
The Carta Nautica collection is positioned as a travel retail exclusive. Interested collectors and enthusiasts are directed to specific boutique locations for acquisition.
Historical Context for Vintage Releases
The 1987 vintage is the first in this specific nautical-themed series. The distillery’s emphasis on the “Six Pillars”—which include its Curiously Small Stills and the use of the finest cut of the distillate—remains the foundation for these releases.
