Canadiens’ Demidov Not Returning to KHL, Trade Rumors Swirl
Former Red Wings Star Pushes for Young Talent’s Return to Russia
As the NHL draft approaches, speculation intensifies around player movement, but one potential relocation is already off the table. Despite a plea from former Detroit Red Wings player and current St. Petersburg coach Igor Larionov, Montreal won’t loan rising star Ivan Demidov back to the KHL.
Larionov’s Appeal for Demidov
Larionov, who now coaches Demidov’s former team, expressed his desire to have the young forward return to Russia. “I understand that Demidov is a real gem for the Canadiens,”
he explained. “But sometimes you need to take a step back to move three steps forward. I’d really love the chance to work with this kid. I don’t know if it will happen, but I will be asking for him to be loaned back for one year.”
However, Montreal appears firm in its commitment to developing Demidov within its organization.

Red Wings Watch
The Detroit Red Wings may be making some roster adjustments as well. Daily Faceoff’s buyout projections include veteran defenseman Justin Holl, and former Red Wing Joe Veleno, who was recently traded to the Chicago Blackhawks. A nostalgic note for Detroit fans: forty years ago this week, a Red Wings jersey made a memorable appearance in the film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, boosting the team’s profile.
Offseason Moves
Detroit has added Latvian forward Eduards Tralmaks, who led the Czech Extraliga in scoring, and prospect forward Jesse Kiiskinen, who recorded 44 points in Finland’s top league. Departures include prospect defenseman Eemil Viro, who signed with Malmo in Sweden, and assistant coach Jay Varady, who is joining the Philadelphia Flyers.
Around the League
The New Jersey Devils are reportedly considering trades for forwards JJ Peterka, Jason Roberton, and Martin Necas. The Philadelphia Flyers are also evaluating a potential move for Necas. Meanwhile, the Pittsburgh Penguins are seeking a substantial return for 35-goal scorer Rickard Rakell, potentially targeting a first-round draft pick or a promising young player from teams like the Buffalo Sabres and Detroit Red Wings.
Florida Panthers coach Paul Maurice offered words of support for recently fired coach Pete DeBoer, stating, “He’s going to be OK.”
The San Jose Sharks are widely expected to select Michael Misa with the No. 2 overall pick in the draft, and the Vegas Golden Knights may need to trade defenseman Nic Hague to create cap space, with several teams showing interest.
The NHL offseason is shaping up to be a period of significant change, with teams positioning themselves for contention in the coming seasons.
